Dr. Sam will share the how and why she set up housing and services for women coming out of the prison and changed federal laws to support incarcerated women, what she saw in prison that motivated her to get started, and the vision of what she wants to see next.

Dr. Topeka K. Sam
Since my release from federal prison in 2015, I have dedicated myself to creating The Ladies of Hope Ministries, an award-winning non-profit organization. Our mission is to end the poverty crisis and the incarceration of women and girls. Additionally, I have worked tirelessly on multiple pieces of state and federal legislation aimed specifically at protecting the rights of incarcerated women, including prohibiting the inhumane practice of restraining women in labor with handcuffs. Alongside my nonprofit work, I co-founded FRSH, a retail bank that provides essential banking services to individuals caught in the criminal justice system who often face discrimination from national banks.
