Elephants can call one another up to about 6 miles, using infrasonic rumbles that carry through air and even into the ground. Females—especially matriarchs and those in estrus—are the most constant broadcasters, using low rumbles to coordinate movement, hold family groups together, and keep contact with relatives spread across the landscape. During estrus, a cow’s call deepens and signals her reproductive state, drawing receptive bulls from miles away.
